Before this, he served as the 25th prime minister from to and as the mayor of Istanbul from to Other co-founders of the AK Party also followed this same educational path. His economic policies have also caused issues, leading to high inflation and a depreciation of the Turkish lira.

Most recently, he responded to the Russian invasion of Ukraine by taking actions such as closing the Bosphorus to Russian naval reinforcements and mediating a prisoner exchange. He has been the President of Turkey since and previously served as Prime Minister for over a decade.
